Hiring a lawyer for one defined part of a legal matter - advice, drafting a document, or a single hearing - instead of the whole case, and the written agreement that sets the boundary.
Looking for a lawyer rather than a definition? Skip to the state-by-state list of law firms for this.
A lawyer does not have to be hired for an entire case. Under limited-scope representation, sometimes called unbundled legal services, the client and lawyer agree that the lawyer will do a defined part of the work: a consultation to assess the case, reviewing or drafting a complaint, answer, settlement or other document the client will file themselves, coaching before a hearing, or appearing at one hearing or a mediation. The client handles the rest. It is a common route for people who cannot pay for full representation and do not qualify for legal aid, and it is used heavily in family law, landlord-tenant cases and small civil claims.
The professional rules allow it on two conditions: the limitation must be reasonable in the circumstances, and the client must give informed consent - which in practice means a written agreement stating exactly what the lawyer will and will not do. A limitation is not reasonable if the defined task cannot competently be done on its own. Within the agreed scope, the lawyer owes the same duties as in any other representation, including competence and confidentiality.
When a lawyer appears in court for part of a case, many state courts have a notice-of-limited-appearance form, and a procedure to withdraw once the agreed task is finished. When a lawyer only drafts documents the client files, state rules differ on whether the document must disclose that a lawyer helped prepare it. Either way, the client remains responsible for every deadline outside the agreed scope.
Ask for the scope in writing before paying: which tasks are included, which are not, who files what, and what happens if the case changes. Many lawyers price unbundled work as a flat fee per task, and some legal aid and bar programs offer limited-scope help at reduced cost.
